Be WISER when using AI 🧐

Your weekly does of AI clarity, minus the complexity

Welcome, AI Freedom Finders

This week we are focussed on methods not tools. The how not the what. Sometimes it’s better to improve our implementation rather than trying to find another new tool to make up for a lack of skill. Hence using AI WISER. This handy acronym (read on below…) is an easy-to-remember method for ensuring AI gives you the best response every time.

Even better? It doesn’t matter which AI language model your trying - it will work with them all!

In today’s Brief:

  • Amazon develops multimodal AI for advanced video search 🔍

  • UK Government fails AI transparency despite mandatory register 🚫

  • AI assistant customises responses to match user style 🎯

The Brief: Amazon developed Olympus, a new multimodal AI model capable of video and image processing, whilst maintaining strategic partnerships through continued investment in Anthropic, strengthening its position in AI development.

Details:

  • Amazon has developed Olympus, a new AI model capable of processing images, videos and text, reducing reliance on Anthropic's services.

  • The Olympus LLM enables scene-specific searches through videos using text prompts, particularly useful for finding specific moments.

  • Despite recent £4 billion investment in Anthropic, Amazon seeks to strengthen its position against competitors Google, Microsoft and OpenAI.

  • AWS may unveil Olympus at next week's re:Invent conference, marking significant advancement in Amazon's AI capabilities.

Why It Matters:

Amazon's leap into multimodal AI with Olympus marks a pivotal shift from being perceived as an AI follower to potentially leading in video search capabilities, whilst maintaining strategic partnerships. This dual approach could reshape both AWS's market position and how businesses interact with video content.

The Brief: Despite mandating AI system registration, UK government departments have largely failed to comply, raising concerns about transparency and oversight as AI increasingly manages crucial public services.

Details:

  • The UK government has failed to register AI systems despite mandatory requirements, with only nine algorithmic systems recorded since February.

  • Government departments actively use AI for benefits, immigration and policing, with contracts worth millions awarded for various AI services.

  • Technology Secretary Peter Kyle acknowledges lack of transparency, admitting public sector hasn't taken algorithmic disclosure seriously enough.

  • DWP processes 20,000 documents daily using AI, whilst Home Office deploys 'robo-caseworker' systems for immigration enforcement decisions.

Why It Matters:

The UK government's failure to track its AI systems reveals a concerning disconnect between rapid AI adoption and proper oversight. With billions in projected savings driving deployment, the lack of transparency risks eroding public trust and potentially enabling discriminatory outcomes in critical public services.

The Brief: Anthropic launched custom styles for Claude.ai, allowing users to personalise AI communication through preset and custom options, making AI interactions more natural and professionally relevant.

Details:

  • Claude's new style customisation feature allows users to personalise responses through preset and custom communication preferences.

  • Users can choose from formal, concise, and explanatory preset styles, or create custom styles by uploading sample content.

  • GitLab has successfully implemented Claude's styles to standardise communication across business cases, documentation and marketing materials.

  • The feature enables consistent voice adaptation across different contexts whilst maintaining natural, personalised interactions with users.

Why It Matters:

Anthropic's custom styles feature marks a pivotal shift in AI communication, moving from generic responses to personalised interactions. This advancement could accelerate AI adoption in professional settings by allowing companies to maintain consistent communication standards whilst leveraging AI capabilities effectively.

Are you using AI tools like ChatGPT in your business? If you're finding the results a bit hit-and-miss, you're not alone. Many business owners I speak to say they're not quite sure how to "talk" to AI to get what they need.

That's where the WISER™️ method comes in. It's our proprietary way to get better, more consistent results from any AI tool you're using.

What does WISER™️ mean?

Think of WISER™️ as your friendly checklist:

  • Who: Tell the AI what role you want it to play

  • Instruction: Explain exactly what you want

  • Steps: Break down big tasks into smaller bits

  • End-State: Describe what you're trying to achieve

  • Refine: Review the output and adjust your instructions as needed

Let's look at a real example...

Say you want to write a welcome email for new customers. Here's how you'd use WISER™️ (you don’t need to include the parts in yellow):

You are a friendly customer service expert writing to British customers.
[WHO]

Write a welcome email for someone who's just bought from our gift shop.
[INSTRUCTION]

First, write a warm greeting. Then, thank them for their purchase. Finally, explain when their gift will arrive.
[STEPS]

The email should make customers feel valued and excited about their purchase.
[END-STATE]

After reviewing the AI's first draft, you might refine by saying: 'Make it shorter and add a P.S. about our return policy.'
[REFINE]

Simple Tips for Success:

  • Focus on one task at a time

  • Tell, don’t ask

  • Don't use pleases and thank yous - it confuses the instruction

  • Save the instruction for next time or team use

Getting Started Pick one simple task in your business - perhaps writing product descriptions or customer emails. Try using the WISER™️ method and see how it works for you. Remember, the magic often happens in the refining stage, where you can shape the AI's output to match exactly what you need.

The Bottom Line

You don't need to be a tech expert to get good results from AI. Using WISER is like having a simple recipe - follow the steps, and don't be afraid to ask for adjustments until you get exactly what you want.
