Inaugural Edition: ChatGPT’s new search feature

Your weekly dose of AI clarity, minus the complexity

Welcome, AI Freedom Finders

Welcome to The AI Brief, or “The AB” for short.

This newsletter is going to be a short, no-fluff update on the world of AI for people who don’t have the time to keep up to date with technology.

It’s going to be easy and quick to read and will have some useful ideas for you to try as AI becomes more and more common.

In today’s Brief:

  • 🛡️ Anthropic expands Claude to defence sector

  • 🖼️ Bytedance reveals software to animate portraits

  • 🧠 AI explores new ways to treat childhood brain tumors

The Brief: Anthropic have announced a partnership with Palantir and AWS to provide U.S. intelligence and defense agencies access to Anthropic's Claude 3 and 3.5 AI models.

Details:

  • The partnership enables the use of Claude within Palantir's products to support government operations, including rapid processing of complex data, enhancing data-driven insights, and aiding U.S. officials in making informed decisions.

  • The integration aims to improve intelligence analysis, streamline resource-intensive tasks, and boost operational efficiency across departments.

  • Palantir has already seen success with its AI Platform and Claude in the commercial sector, where a leading American insurer automated a significant portion of their underwriting process, reducing a two-week task to just three hours!

Why It Matters:

The partnership highlights AI's potential to process vast amounts of complex data quickly. For small businesses, this translates to opportunities for automating routine tasks and streamlining operations, potentially increasing productivity by up to 66%. It also shows how AI can provide a significant edge in complex operations - or level the playing field - allowing small businesses to compete more effectively with larger enterprises.

The Brief: Bytedance (the company behind TikTok and CapCut) just revealed X-Portrait 2, a software which can take a static image, combine it with a “driving” video, and the software will map those movements onto the static portrait.

Details:

  • The update from X-Portrait is significant - the new software more accurately captures facial expressions including frowning, laughing and fast talking with impressive realism.

  • X-Portrait 2 works with genuine portraits, computer generated ones and cartoon characters, opening possibilities for animation, virtual agents, and visual effects and more.

  • The update could potentially be integrated into TikTok as a free competitor to larger AI avatar/lip sync platforms.

Why It Matters:

We have never been closer to professional-grade character animation being accessible to the masses. Whilst this could be incredible for creativity, it could also lead to challenging times leading to misinformation and the misuse of this technology for fraud.

The Brief: Researchers are exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to develop new treatments for childhood brain tumors, aiming to improve survival rates for affected children. With about 420 cases diagnosed annually in the UK, the initiative seeks to address the unique challenges posed by these tumors.

Details:

  • Current treatments, including immunotherapy, often fall short for pediatric brain tumors due to the brain's ongoing development in children, which complicates treatment effectiveness.

  • The Cancer Research Children's Tumour Centre of Excellence in Cambridge is focusing on creating less toxic medications specifically designed for children, as existing therapies can have severe side effects.

  • The research team plans to use AI to create digital models of complex brain tumors, facilitating virtual clinical trials to identify gentler treatment options compared to traditional methods like radiotherapy.

Why It Matters:

Utilising AI to simulate tumour behaviour and treatment responses could result in significant advancements in paediatric oncology, providing hope for gentler therapies with reduced side effects and potentially improving survival rates for the youngest patients.
