Welcome, AI Freedom Finders

Welcome back to this week's AI Brief!

In today's edition, we're looking at the most powerful AI from China - DeepSeek.

Somewhat controversial, as detractors claim DeepSeek used proprietary OpenAI information in order to create their model so quickly and cheaply. Others raise concerns about information security and the fact the DeepSeek is, as all Chinese companies are, required to shared any requested information with Chinese state authorities by default.

Despite these concerns, DeepSeek is extremely cost-effective and very powerful too. So depending on your use-case, it could be a very good option to consider…

The Brief: Apple's Siri is set for a gradual AI transformation, with a fully modernised version potentially not arriving until 2027, focusing on privacy and incremental, strategic improvements.

Details:

  • Apple may not release a fully modernised, conversational Siri until iOS 20 in 2027, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

  • A new Siri version will debut in May, incorporating Apple Intelligence features with a "two-brain" approach for different types of commands.

  • The company plans to announce an internal "LLM Siri" system at WWDC in June, with a launch expected in spring 2026.

  • Full development of Siri's advanced capabilities will likely commence after the 2026 release, potentially rolling out in 2027.

Why It Matters:

Apple risks falling behind in the AI race, with a potentially half-decade delay in delivering a truly conversational assistant. Their privacy-first, deliberate approach may cost them market relevance in the rapidly evolving digital intelligence landscape.

The Brief: Mistral launches a sophisticated OCR API that transforms complex PDFs into Markdown, enabling superior AI document processing with multimodal detection and enhanced readability.

Details:

  • Mistral launches a new multimodal OCR API that converts complex PDF documents into AI-friendly Markdown files with enhanced readability.

  • The API can detect and handle illustrations and graphics within text, creating bounding boxes and maintaining document structure for AI processing.

  • Mistral claims superior performance compared to Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI OCR APIs, particularly with mathematical expressions and non-English documents.

  • The API is designed to support RAG systems and simplify document access for companies, enabling more efficient AI-powered document analysis and retrieval.

Why It Matters:

Mistral's groundbreaking OCR API transforms complex PDFs into AI-readable formats, potentially revolutionising document processing across industries by enabling more sophisticated, nuanced information extraction and analysis.

The Brief: UK's cybersecurity agency, NCSC, quietly removed encryption guidance, potentially undermining digital privacy after pressuring Apple to provide backdoor access to encrypted data.

Details:

  • The UK's National Cyber Security Centre has removed encryption advice from its websites, previously recommending encryption tools like Apple's Advanced Data Protection.

  • Apple has been ordered to provide a backdoor for encrypted iCloud data, leading to the withdrawal of ADP for UK users.

  • The original document advising encryption use is now deleted, with the URL redirecting to a page recommending Apple's Lockdown Mode instead.

  • Apple is challenging the UK government's data access order through the Investigatory Powers Tribunal, maintaining its stance on user privacy.

Why It Matters:

The UK government's encryption retreat signals a dangerous precedent where digital privacy is sacrificed for potential surveillance, potentially leaving professionals and high-risk individuals more vulnerable to data breaches and privacy violations.
